CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN

From the Climate Catastrophe Archives: “Cape Town Gripped with Life-Threatening Water Shortage.”

Cape Town, South Africa, may serve as a harbinger of the future. Over the span of four years, between 2015 and 2018, the metropolis has grappled with a drought crisis. With a population of 4.6 million, the city was precariously inching toward the unimaginable scenario of running out of water. Fortunately, “Day Zero” never materialized, thanks to a combination of public initiatives and engineering solutions.

However, the situation in the United States offers a less optimistic perspective. The summer of 2023 commenced with the most severe droughts ever witnessed in the Midwest and the Plains, concluding with unprecedented drought conditions in the Southern states. These events coincided with a period of record-breaking heat across the country.

Regrettably, the droughts only compounded the problems, leading to record-breaking rainfall, resulting in floods, mudslides, and millions of dollars in damages.

Various factors contribute to these environmental challenges, with climate change ranking prominently at the top of the list. As the climate continues to warm, water evaporation accelerates, posing a serious concern for the future. The situation in Cape Town serves as a stark warning of what may lie ahead.
